Each year, the average family spends hundreds of dollars on children’s clothing, electronics, and back-to-school supplies. For families who are struggling to pay rent and buy groceries that amount of cash can be hard to come by. As a result, while many Mercer County youth are excitedly selecting new backpacks, folders and other school supplies, other area kids are experiencing the stress and frustration of knowing that even the most basic education supplies will be hard, if not impossible, for them to obtain.
That’s why, for the past several years, Our Home Family Resource Center has administered a Back-To-School Supply Project in Mercer County. This effort brings individuals, churches, and businesses from across the county together to provide for new book bags stocked with essential school supplies, so that low-income students can join their peers in returning to school with excitement and confidence. Last year this project provided school supplies to over 300 children in Celina, Parkway, Coldwater, Ft. Recovery, St. Henry, and Mercer County Head Start (pre-school and K-12).
The 2018 Back-To-School Project kicks off on Monday, July 2nd. Parents/guardians of students who would like assistance with school supplies must sign-up and can do so at Our Home Family Resource Center July 2nd through August 2nd: Monday through Thursday, 8:30-12:00 & 1:00-4:30.
Folks who would like to support the 2018 Back-To-School Supply Project are encouraged to donate any of the following: book bags (new), solid color pocket folders, glue bottles/sticks, Crayola markers, colored pencils, 24 count crayons, zipper school pouches, filler paper (wide rule), #2 pencils (not mechanical), erasers, pointed scissors, dry erase markers, highlighters, and ear buds. Monetary donations are also accepted, and will be used toward purchase of items necessary to meet the needs of our applicants.
The items that are generally most challenging for us to provide are book bags, dry erase markers, wide rule filler paper, and ear buds. Of course, any items donated will help the cause!
Donations may be dropped off at Our Home during regular business hours Monday, July 2nd through Thursday, August 9th. Volunteers will then sort and pack the donations for pick-up by families at Celina First Church of God on August 14th and 15th.
